Teacher Professional Bio

I’m delighted to find myself (after wanting to be a schoolteacher since age 5), currently teaching my own children.  It’s a rather unique twist of events, and I am loving every moment of it.

If you’ve read the “About” page, then you already know a bit about my interests.

Professionally, I have worked in several different areas throughout my life.

In college, I majored in Child Development, with the intention of owning and operating my own child care center at some point in my life.  Right after college, I ended up working as a library assistant for a few years, and soon afterward resigned so that I could earn my Masters in Interactive Technology.

While in my graduate program, I learned a lot about educational technology, distance education, and applying multimedia to educational coursework.  My love for kids combined with my growing passion for technology in the classroom was beginning to sort of fuse together.  I had an opportunity to observe a few private schools in my area and their elementary ed technology programs as I was being considered for joining the staff.  During this process, I began to churn ideas for perhaps expanding my own business to include a kids tech program of my own.  While this never played out, I can certainly see the results of the ideas in our home school.

To backtrack, also while in grad school, I started up my web design company, Faith Media, which soon turned into a profitable internet technology  consulting company.  I helped other businesses set up websites and podcasts, create banners and graphics, coached them on internet marketing strategies, and created web design and marketing tutorials and videos.

So, here I am today, teaching my kids at home all types of subjects- math, science, language arts, history, French,  typing, Bible, manners and character development, etc. – and it is truly a journey.  It is also a technology journey, in which I learn to help them integrate technology into their education.

My hope is that they are prepared for the technology-driven society we live in as they grow older- not so much for the ease of video games and such- but for the ability to express their thoughts quickly and efficiently (through typing), and even the empowerment to make a positive difference in the world through healthy online expression (web building), and utilizing online tools to gather important information (research).

All of this has to be taught to our children in a way that provides for their safety, but it still should not be neglected.
